As Holden continued its technological innovations, Australians came to anticipate better and better models with each new release—and in 1995 the Commodore VS was the perfect answer to their expectations. The Commodore VS line is believed to be the “facelift” of the VR line introduced earlier. The big news at the launch of the VS was its ECOTEC V6 engine. It was smaller, lighter, smoother, and more fuel-efficient than the V6 engines Holden had previously used in its cars.. This engine had new blockheads and manifolds as well as a new alloy-cast sump which provided a power boost of around 17 kW and lowered fuel consumption by around 6%. The production of the VS line lasted until 1997.
The design features of the Commodore VS were geared toward providing security and comfort, sodual airbags were made standard on the Acclaim, Calais, Statesman and Caprice, and optional on the rest of the line. The Commodore VS series was the first Australian- made car to offer a passenger's side airbag, which had a capacity of 120L.
The VS Series II was introduced in July 1996, and during its latter run, a 50th anniversary limited-edition Utility was also released. Later in the same year, the Statesman, Caprice, and Utility were released in the Series III batch. The Series II VS’s V8 engine power was 168 kW. In addition, the Calais model in this series offered a supercharged V6 engine.
The Commodore Equipe, introduced as a limited edition from March to April of 1996, was available in only two colours: Silver Ice and Botanica. The Series II version of this edition became available in October 1996.
The Commodore Vacationer was also provided as a limited edition, along with the Commodore Esteem, which was launched in March 1997.
