Holden’s reputation for innovative safety technologies, excellent value, and driver performance was reinforced in 2004 with the launch of its new Commodore VZ line. The Commodore VZ was equipped with a new six-cylinder Alloytec engine powered by Alloytec. The resulting increased fuel efficiency of the Commodore VZ blended perfectly with its new upgraded speed transmissions. Some models featured electronically-operated safety measures to assist with vehicle control in emergencies. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is widely regarded as one of the most significant automotive safety systems ever to come on the auto market, and, with the Commodore VZ, Holden offered it for the first time on an Australian-manufactured sedan.
Some of the standard features of the Commodore VZ line included power steering, dual zone climate control, power front windows, a single CD player, cruise control, air conditioning, dual front and side airbags, active head restraints, corner brake control, traction control, projector headlamps, front fog lamps, body kit, leather steering wheel, alloy pedal trim, and 8-way power front seats .
High-output 5.7 L Gen III V8 engines- specified on the SS Commodore, SV8, and WL Caprice models- increased power up to 250 kW.
The Commodore Lumina was launched as a limited edition in December 2004, with 3,500 cars produced. It offered features such as air conditioning, rear power windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a gear selector, a handbrake handle, a six-disc dashboard CD player, an upgraded multi-function trip computer, FE2 sports suspension, 17" wide-spoke alloy wheels (including a steel spare wheel), a rear spoiler (on the sedan), a wagon roof rack, a wagon dust deflector and roof rails in the same colour as the body, a chrome exhaust tip, side mouldings the same colour as the body, black headlamp bezels, and unique interior trim.
The Commodore Equipe, launched in April 2005, was another limited-edition model in the VZ line, with 3,500 cars produced. The 2625 sedans and 875 wagons were offered in five colours: Heron White (solid white), Quicksilver Metallic (metallic silver), Shanghai Mica (metallic medium red), Martini Mica (metallic pale olive gold), and Barbados Mica (metallic medium blue).
The Commodore SSZ was launched in September 2005, with 930 cars produced. It was based primarily on the SS model, offering features such as leather seats emblazoned with the SSZ logo, premium performance brakes, a colour-coded SSZ instrument cluster, black centre-mounted oil and voltmeters, 18-inch VZ Monaro wheels, Rear Park Assist, and Bluetooth.
