Hey People!Holden VS Sedan 4.2L V6 TurboAs a slight introduction to this write up I will give you a bit of history of the car. This particular VS is owned by a friend of mine and for this reason or that he is no longer able to drive it. However that didn't stop work on his street/drag ready "V6" Commodore. The car was purchased stock and pretty much thrashed repetativly... Heres where the fun began:After fanging the stock ECOTEC V6 engine for a time it was time for more. On went a cold air kit. Pfffft. It was not the be all and end all of power injections, put it that way. So on went the build up.
Over the next few weeks I'll get off me lazy ass and get all the photos and juicy bits and bring this thread up to date. But before I do that I will bring you up to speed on how the Project is going to the best of my memories.
After the cold air kit a rethought of the Commodore was fashioned. Instead of unleashing some cash to lavish the motor at this early stage of the build; why not ready the car around the motor. In went a very trick LSD with a 4.11 final ratio. This was
GREAT when you need to do a U-turn in only 2 lanes! (3 Point turns... Who needs em'). Before power actually gets to the diff it travels through a custom (from memory) tail-shaft, spun by a fully race prepped 600BHP capable Automatic VS 4 speed. The cogs are swapped however manually using a B&M Shifter. Clutch has been upgraded to a heavy duty one.
During the time all these modifications were being done a trick sound system was installed that was almost louder than the Christmas carols in MYER in the week leading up to Christmas (sorry for the lamness its late.)
I mentioned that the car was getting thrashed alot didn't I. Well after every upgrade it was put through its paces. This can lead to problems... something like a clapped out old turd of an ECOTEC. Major dedication was needed for the next purchase in the build up: The 600hp prepped brand new 4.1L short-block.
I like how that rolls off the tongue. Go on, say it... Jealous? The motor was dropped in ready for boost and was harnessed to the better side of a Haltech CPU. Incidentally even though a manifold will be needed for the turbo some extractors were sourced to get the 6 screaming (Pre-turbo). Now before we get serious lets not forget the chosen direction for the VS... Build the car around the motor, then build the arse out of the motor.
So in went a bit of the traditional happy gas to keep everyone smiling (Also a key stepping stone to lowering 60 Foot times at the strip once a big laggy hairdryer is strapped on!). First a 50 shot and now using a 75HP jet. NOS is really great for a motor like a ECOTEC, it gets rid of that "Shoul'd ave bought an 8" feeling.
Trialling modifcations at the strip is the most rewarding part of owning a car similar or just like this one.
At the start of its path down the DragCar road it was running pathetic 15-16sec quarters. Throughout the modifications the car has gotten more and more pow, helped by a set of Mickey Thompson Drag Radials to record a best time of 13.7sec. (Faster times are reachable now with more attention to tyre pressure and launch technique. i.e. PRACTICE.)
It's currently waiting for the final piece of the puzzel.
"GT3582R - 714568 - 1" That is the serial number of a fantastic piece of engineering. This turbo is on the larger end of the "Medium Frame" turbos offered by the Company Garrett. Without going into detail It is a 600HP flow rated ball-bearing MONSTER and will really make this VS sing. The car is at a stalled point at the moment as owner is waiting upon a local performance shop to release a "kit", if you will. The goal is to run about 550-600BHP running about 1.7Bar though the huffer and 10's on the strip. 25psi is alot for any motor to handle but the 4.1L should be up to the task. Another modifaction planned for when the turbo goes on is a hefty transbrake so turbo will already be spooling off the line.

In writing up this I have done one of my favourite Commordores an injustice. There is so much that I have left out I almost feel guilty. With time I will try and track down some more info and flesh out some areas. Given the car is still pre-turbo I will attempt to document the transofrmation from NA to boosted when it happens. If you have any questions about the build up I will attempt to answer them as best I can, but like I said
*unfortuantly* its not my car...
Cheers for reading the rant about my mates VS,
