As far as I know, its only considered "acceptable" in cars newer than 2005.

hi ive been using ethonal enhanced fuel in my vs wagon for about 12mths now and have found it to be great on fuel economy as well as it feels to have better power. one of the things the fuel companies dont tell u is that theycan blend ethanol with the std unleaded with ethanol up to 10% without advertising that its there. anyway ive had no problems with the fuel or issues with my car at all. i use major brand fuel companies for my fuel as well.

I imagine it has a negative effect on fuel injectors, pump, etc.
Perhaps there is a website listing compatible vehicles...?
